Stress Management at Work

Stress Management at Work

There is a saying that stress is a part of life, which is true. But if not properly managed, not only can it affect your health, but it can burn you out and significantly reduce your productivity.

Speaking of workplace stress, it’s mainly a result of our reactions when we feel pressured. Factors like poor salaries, excessive and undefined work roles, toxic work environment, interpersonal conflict, job insecurity, and how we deal with them, can lead to workplace stress.

It is almost impossible to avoid being stressed, however as a professional, there is a need to adopt coping strategies to help you keep stress in check.

  1. Relax: you must have heard the phrase “work no dey finish”, well, that's true, you need to listen to your body, know when to replenish or take a break.

  2. Know your Role: Do what you’re assigned. Don’t let impromptu tasks always come to you. If your role is well defined, it will save you from unnecessary engagements. Taking on many roles can lead to confusion and burnout.

  3. Avoid Bad Energy. Stay away from conflict, better known as interpersonal conflicts. Don't make friends with toxic people at work, they’ll drain you.

  4. Be Organised. Have your to do list. Plan your activities ahead and stay on top of it, this will help you reduce work burnout. Multitasking does not work well for everyone so know what works for you.

  5. Check your Comfort: Are your chair and desk comfortable? If not, request a replacement. Ensure you keep an organised desk or workstation. Physical discomfort can frustrate you at work.

  6. Let Lunch be Lunch. Observe your lunch break; that way you can decrease screen time if you’re always in front of a computer. A nap at lunch hour isn't a bad idea too, this can help you refresh. Don't always use lunchtime for work, stretch your body, get some rest or even take a walk.

  7. Get Help: if your job is draining or excessively stressful, try speaking to your supervisor or getting professional help if you can, either with a therapist or medical advice. Don't wait until you're worn out, learn to watch out for yourself because health is wealth.

Finally, no matter how stressful your job or workplace may be, remember to always find a balance to avoid breakdown. And to our lovely employers, ensure you have policies in place that boost your workforce rather than drain them.

We hope you find this helpful and wish you all a stress free day!
